Level the playing field for pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties.
Reliance on a keyboard seems to be taken for granted. Yet dictating documents can overcome that barrier for so many young people that find that difficult or are disadvantaged through learning differences such as dyslexia or dyspraxia.
According to the British Dyslexia Association dyslexia affects 10% of the UK population and "primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. Characteristic features of dyslexia are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed. Dyslexia occurs across the range of intellectual abilities. It is best thought of as a continuum, not a distinct category, and there are no clear cut-off points. Co-occurring difficulties may be seen in aspects of language, motor co-ordination, mental calculation, concentration and personal organisation, but these are not, by themselves, markers of dyslexia. A good indication of the severity and persistence of dyslexic difficulties can be gained by examining how the individual responds or has responded to well-founded intervention."
Speech recognition used to be very unpredictable and took quite a while to train effectively so that made it cumbersome to use in an educational context. Now that is not the case as it is fast to train, easy and accurate to use it can open up the digital world of learning to so many students are now dependent on it.
Here Jane Scaysbrook, Specialist Teacher and PATOSS Assessment Practising Certificate holder gives her opinion...
Determining the correct approach to deploying speech recognition is entirely individual to each student. Exonera is an approved Nuance Dragon partner and operates a generous licensing model that allows unlimited users per installation i.e. for each computer or device the software is installed on there is no limit to the number of voice profiles that can be set up.
For fast deployment that we recommend a pilot programme with a free trial of the Dragon cloud-based solutions Dragon Anywhere Group and Dragon Professional Anywhere.
